Addictive substances, also known as drugs, exist long before medieval times, where they were used as a cure to relieve the pain of disease and even for personal satisfaction.
With the passage of time we have been knowing more types of new opiates,
more powerful, cheaper or more addictive, as we have stopped hearing about others. As for tobacco and alcohol, they have always been used to please man, either to make him more interesting or intellectual, or to distinguish his social class by offering a drink among men.
Honestly, if you want any substance of the spoken, you can easily get it in the street, since that illegal always attracts more those who have less purchasing power. In conclusion, I think that the consumption of opiates is much worse than that of tobacco or alcohol, although these should also be banned for the evils they cause.
